6.3 Status of economic activities of working street children and associated causes

There are two categories of street children: children of the street, who live on the streets, and children on the streets, who spend most of their time on streets but return home. In both these cases, street children spend an ample amount of their time in earning their livelihood. This study reveals that nearly 97 per cent of children of the street are involved in some form of economic activity (see Table 6.1). This means that out of 10 street children, 9 of them are working. According to Philips (1994), street children are mostly engaged in the ‘informal sector.’
